We get the callback, we get  the enthusiasm of a  manager  talking about our qualifications, and then we hear…nothing.It doesn’t make sense! Didn’t they like you?  When you’re unemployed and  bills need to get  paid, this  silence can feel especially excruciating.Instead of stewing  over these  doubts, you can take action. There are better uses of your time than hovering over your inbox or waiting for a call that may never come.Here’s what you need to understand about why no one is getting back to you and how you should respond.1. Managers are busyDon’t take an employer’s silence as an immediate ‘no.’ In general, it’s important to not take an employer’s  ambivalence or silence personally. While this job may be taking up all of your brain space, it’s helpful to understand that hiring is one of many jobs managers do - and it’s taking up the majority of their days.You can make the waiting period less painful by asking for a clear timeframe to hear back during the interview process. After the end of a call or an interview, be sure to ask about when you should expect to hear back. Having a firm deadline will ease your mind. If no deadline was given or if the deadline passes without a response, you’re well within your rights to send a follow-up email after a week.Remember to frame  the follow-up email as a gentle reminder, not as an accusation. Restate your enthusiasm and interest in the role, then ask politely for any updates in the process.This should all happen in four sentences or less. 40% of emails are  opened on a mobile device where only about the first seven words will be read, so have a clear subject line like, ‘Following up on X position.’2. It’s not you, it’s bureaucracyThere are internal machinations within a company that have nothing to do with you personally, but could be d elaying the hiring process.Budgets can be slashed, hiring freezes can take hold, internal candidates can be vying for your crown, people in hiring positions  can get moved or laid off- all of this company  drama is unseen to an outsider but it can change an encouraging ‘get in touch with you soon’ into radio silence.These case studies serve as a sobering reminder to never trust an offer until it’s in writing.A follow-up email can clarify some of this, but sometimes we have to decide when to cut our losses. Legal issuesThere’s a Yiddish proverb that says “no answer is also an answer.” Sometimes a prolonged silence signals something is wrong, because it’s too awkward or rude for companies to take time to tell them the truth.Sometimes, managers won’t get back in touch with you because they don’t have a clear reason as to why you’re not a cultural fit.If you really want to know w hy they passed on you, you can ask for feedback on how you can improve. Make it clear in your feedback request  that you won’t take the company to court and that you just want some informational help. Just be aware that some managers will still choose to stay silent because they see this as an opening for litigation.One unnamed recruiter said that they use silence when they don’t have a good answer: “One reason I wouldn’t get back to someone is if I had to tell them something that they couldn’t ‘fix,’ such as their personality. That’s because we’re cautious with words we’re unsure of, and, thus, they don’t create much of an issue for us.It’s the words that we think we’re using correctly that wreak the most havoc.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!We throw them around in meetings, e-mails and important documents (such as resumes and client reports), and they land, like fingernails across a chalkboard, on everyone who has to hear or read them.We’re all guilty of this from time to time, myself included.When I write, I hire an editor who is an expert in grammar to review my articles before I post them online. It’s bad enough to have a roomful of people witness your blunder and something else entirely to stumble in front of 100,000!Point is, we can all b enefit from opportunities to sharpen the saw and minimize our mistakes.Often, it’s the words we perceive as being more “correct” or sophisticated that don’t really mean what we think they do. There are 20  such words that have a tendency to make even really smart people stumble.Have a look to see which of these commonly confused words throw you off.Accept vs. ExceptThese two words sound similar but have very different meanings. Accept means to receive something willingly: “His mom accepted his explanation” or “She accepted  the gift graciously.”Except signifies exclusion: “I can attend every meeting except the one next week.”To help you remember, note that both except and exclusion begin with ex.Affect vs. EffectTo make these words even more confusing than they already are, both can be used as either a noun or a verb.Let’s start with the verbs. Affect means to influence something or someone; effect  means to accomplish something. “Your job was affected by the organizational restructuring” but “These changes will be effected on Monday.”As a noun, an effect is the result of something: “The sunny weather had a huge effect  on sales.” It’s almost always the right choice because the noun affect refers to an emotional state and is rarely used outside of psychological circles: “The patient’s affect  was flat.”Lie vs. LayWe’re all pretty clear on the lie that means an untruth. It’s the other usage that trips us up. Lie also means to recline: “Why don’t you lie down and rest?” Lay requires an object: “Lay the book on the table.” Lie is something you can do by yourself, but you need an object to lay.It’s more confusing in the past tense. The past tense of lie is- you guessed it- lay: “I lay down for an hour last night.” And the past tense of lay is laid: “I laid the book on the table.”Bring vs. TakeBring and take both describe transporting something or someone from one place to another, but the correct us age depends on the speaker’s point of view. Somebody brings  something to you, but you take it to somewhere else: “Bring me the mail, then take  your shoes to your room.”Just remember, if the movement is toward you, use bring; if the movement is away from you, use take.Ironic vs. CoincidentalA lot of people get this wrong. If you break your leg the day before a ski trip, that’s not ironic- it’s coincidental (and bad luck).Ironic has several meanings, all of which include some type of reversal of what was expected. Verbal irony is when a person says one thing but clearly means another. Situational irony is when a result is the opposite of what was expected.O. Henry was a master of situational irony. In “The Gift of the Magi,” Jim sells his watch to buy combs for his wife’s hair, and she sells her hair to buy a chain for Jim’s watch. Each character sold something precious to buy a gift for the other, but those gifts were intended for what the other person sold. That is true irony.If you break your leg the day before a ski trip, that’s coincidental. If you drive up to the mountains to ski, and there was more snow back at your house, that’s ironic.Imply vs. InferTo imply means to suggest something without saying it outright. To infer means to draw a conclusion from what someone else implies. As a general rule, the speaker/writer implies, and the listener/reader infers.Nauseous vs. NauseatedNauseous has been misused so often that the incorrect usage is accepted in some circles. Still, it’s important to note the difference. Nauseous means causing nausea; nauseated means experiencing nausea.So, if your circle includes ultra-particular grammar sticklers, never say “I’m nauseous” unless you want them to be snickering behind your back.Comprise vs. ComposeThese are two of the most commonly misused words in the English language. Comprise means to include; compose means to make up.It all comes down to parts versus the whole. The results could be far better or far worse than you imagine. At the very least, you will gain a wealth of experience that is difficult to find anywhere else. And in today’s tough job market place, a startup opportunity can be very appealing.If the company has a unique market niche, solid business strategy and reasonable funding, then go ahead, climb on board, and let’s see where the ride will take you. Here are just a few of the risks and rewards:1. No job description The famous phrase “other duties as required” becomes the norm. You may have to fill in for others when th ey are gone and perform duties that are not even close to your normal responsibilities. You will be called upon to “wear many hats.” This can be very frustrating and nerve-wracking, but it can also make your job extraordinarily exciting.2. Low salary or no salary It is highly unlikely that you will start with a salary or wage that is typical for the industry or for your functional area. Sharing how much you earn and what you know about bad clients and difficult bosses with your colleagues is key to succeeding at work.But new research highlighted in Harvard Business Review finds that these whisper networks are not reaching all the people who need it in the office. Researchers Burcu Subasi, Wendy van Ginkel, and Daan van Knippenber found that your cultural background at work can determine if colleagues are willing to share or are more likely to withhold business information with you.Minority groups at work more likely to be out of the loopIn one of the experiments, researchers split 180 participants into teams that included Dutch, German, or Chinese nationalities. The researchers found that when left unattended for a project of opening a fictional theater, the German and Dutch participants shared information about the project equally with each other, but Chinese participants were more likely to be out of the loop and had their p erformance hurt as a result. The results suggest that smaller cultural differences are not as likely to hold you back, but the more differences that come into play like nationality and language differences, the more likely you are going to experience a knowledge gap.“Nationality minority status invites differences in team member interactions that result in less access to distributed information, and as a consequence lower performance, for low-status nationality minority individuals,” the researchers concluded.Information backchannels help employees know who to work for and what they should ask. Knowledge sharing is especially key to helping vulnerable employees who are just getting established in their careers and lack the support of deep networks. For this kind of collaboration to work, information sharing about what you know about the job needs to be available for all to hear.For bosses, this can means making it a part of your duty to emphasize the value of sharing ideas and g iving feedback. Praise teammates who collaborate with each other and acknowledge credit where it is due. When we know we are being watched for fairness, we feel social pressure to act more fair. The researchers found that when the participants were publicly observed by a third party, knowledge sharing got more even. As someone who lives in Los Angeles, enduring a daily commute can shave years off your life. When you read reports that  82 percent of telecommuters report lower stress levels, it really hits home.Working remotely does have huge benefits. It can improve your health, your monthly transportation bills, and your happiness at work. However, there are some drawbacks. I will, no doubt, read this article in five or ten years and say, “Caileen, you fool!” but for now- right at this moment- remote work is not the best option for me. Let me tell you why. Face-to-face interaction When my previous company went remote, I was not too happy. I had just gone through a horrifying breakup and I simply needed human interaction. It’s not that my coworkers were my best friends in the entire world, but they were people- people with whom I spoke, ate lunch next to, and communicated with on a daily basis. So, when I found out my company was  going remote, I was a little horrified. To me, face-to-face interaction is an integral part of work life. My bosses did take great care to set up weekly Google Hangouts, but was that enough? For me, not so much. While it worked for a long enough time, it soon became old. Even  as an introvert  (maybe especially so), human interaction- daily human interaction- is crucial for me. Without it, I slowly became disengaged in the work. It’s difficult to replicate the excitement, camaraderie, and the hustle when you’re in the “office” section of your studio apartment. For me, the lack of human interaction was my first suspicion that  remote work wasn’t  a good fitfor me- and I was right about that. Career development I was about a year into remote work, when I really felt like I hit a wall. I didn’t hate remote work the entire time. There were huge perks to working remotely. Since I started earlier in the morning (sans commute) I was able to get a ton of extremely focused work done before I ever would have been to work in a normal office. I even  wrote an article  about how much I loved working remotely. The biggest reason that  remote work  didn’t work for me was (and is) my desire to work in a live, moving environment. When my position and my entire company went remote, I had a cushy job title- but if I am being honest, I didn’t have the skill set I wanted to have for myself. Online learning  is amazing- you can learn entirely new skill sets through online courses, in-depth articles, and by following experts in your own field. However, there are things you will not learn from anything else other than hands-on experience. Sure, I can watch one thousand videos on how to tie my shoes on  YouTube, but I will never know how to do it unless I tie my own shoes. This is something that began to weigh heavily on me. I thought, the longer I stay here, the more opportunity I am missing out on. I wanted to be face-to-face with clients, to work through problems in real-time, and to experience day-to-day life that simply wasn’t happening in my apartment. The biggest drawback was a stalling in  my own professional development. A huge part of building your career is paying attention to the gaps in your own skill sets- and filling them in. It became increasingly apparent that, in order to truly earn a director title, I needed to be directing IRL. Personal discipline while working remotely This is a reason many people cite for not being able to work remotely. In truth, you will learn to build better personal discipline. Depending on your company’s remote policies, you may even be able to make your own hours. This allows any employee to work at her  peak productivity- during her most productive times. We aren’t all robots- as such, we are not all wired to be at our highest efficiency between the hours of 9 am and 5 pm. In this way, remote work can be excellent. You can ride your own productivity waves- whenever they arrive. If you have real doubts about building any sort of personal discipline, remote work probably isn’t for you. Sure, it’s great for activities like writing or pulling data- where you need dedicated time and limited distractions, but it can be detrimental when you are working on a project with a team- which brings me to my next point. Heads-down versus heads-together Heads-down work is crucial- in any position. For heads-down tasks, remote work is optimal. There are no distractions- nobody is coming to ask you a quick question. You can set your away message on Slack and toil away at your heads down work. Unless you are working heavily in data analytics or complicated coding projects, not all of your work is heads-down work. For work that needs to be completed by a  team working together collaboratively, remote work is not the greatest. This is what I like to call heads-together work. This is the kind of work that no FaceTime, no Hangout, and no video call can replicate. Believe me, I have tried. It may sound cheesy, but there is no way to fully replicate an in-person brainstorm meeting. For example, when we hold our editorial planning meetings here at CC, we get together in a room with colored markers and a whiteboard- and we go off. As we fill the weeks with content that excites and motivates us, the energy really builds. This heads-together work is crucial to the mission of your company. I am trying really hard not to use the word synergy here, but you get the gist, right? Heads-together work, to me, is invaluable. Traveling remotely isn’t that great “But you can travel wherever you want- and work from anywhere!” Ok, sure. The truth about traveling when you work remotely is that it’s tough. First of all, before you go anywhere, you are going to have to make sure you have reliable internet. In working remotely, you learn quickly that your local coffee shop probably doesn’t have wifi strong enough for your Google Hangouts. That coffee shop in Miami? You won’t know about those wifi issues until you’re there- literally sweating because you can’t join the marketing meeting you’re supposed to be running. The second problem with traveling remotely is other people. I love you family, friends, and loved ones- but you all made working remotely while traveling a real struggle. In my experience, those who haven’t worked remotely won’t (or can’t) take it seriously. As a result, when you’re traveling with others, they are constantly trying to pull you away from work. Okay, maybe it’s my fault- I can tend to be a people pleaser, so this was a huge point of stress for me. Traveling, especially for any type of enjoyment, is not that great when you’re working remotely. Seriously. You will likely miss out on happy hours, kiteboarding, midday pool lounges, Aperol spritzes, and countless other events. Is semi-remote the future? Here’s the part where I contradict everything I have said so far. Remote work can have  huge benefits- and I think it’s part of the future. Companies that allow a remote Friday or that are open to semi-flexible schedules are going to see huge increases in employee efficiency and satisfaction. But I also know that’s a big wish, and I don’t know any genies (at the moment). I do, however, know several people who report to managers who yell constantly or make them cry. I know even more people who’ve been in that situation at previous roles. And the reasons why it took them so long to leave- or why they still haven’t left yet- are valid: They can’t afford to, they’re afraid to, they’re supporting families, they don’t know the next step they want to take. So, this article isn’t going to tell you that the best move is to just quit (that said, if there’s one piece of advice I can give it’s finding a way to get out as soon as you feasibly can). I’m writing this for the people who can’t leave right now and need help coping. And to make sure I’m giving you the best possible advice, I turned to Alyssa Petersel, LMSW, therapist, and Founder and CEO of My Wellbeing. Figure Out What Stress Management Tool Works for You “I think stress management is really important,” Petersel told me when we first sat down to discuss this topic. “Everyone has tools that work best for them, and it’s about finding something that’s cathartic. That might be exercising, or it could be watching something funny, or it could be spending time with friends and family. Moreover, seek support from others who have been in similar situations to help you feel less alone.” If you’re unsure of what might work for you, read this, this, and this. Create Physical Space Between the Two of You Petersel also suggests setting boundaries- literal, physical boundaries: “Communicate with your boss when you have to, but then give yourself that space.” This could be as simple as taking your lunch break or walking around outside the office when you have a free moment. This also goes for managing your boss’ outbursts. Says Lynn Taylor, a national workplace expert who’s quoted in a Forbes article about workplace bullies, “‘When in doubt, if you notice a warning sign, get out of the way. Just as you shouldn’t stick your face near the snout of a snarling dog, you should remove yourself from the path of a manic bully until things cool off.’” Embrace Mindfulness If you find it’s difficult to physically remove yourself from your boss, meditation- at your desk or at home- can also help you put up a safety net: “When things get overwhelming and you need a little bit of space, but don’t necessarily have the physical space or time to actually be removed from the situation, mindfulness helps you create space internally,” says Petersel. “[Y]ou can’t change your boss or fix his response to stress…If indeed your boss has tipped over the edge, no amount of perfection on your part…will help…What you can do is work on yourself,” adds author of How to Be Happy at Work: The Power of Purpose, Hope, and Friendship Annie McKee in a recent Harvard Business Review article. “Free up some time for renewal…mindfulness meditation has a profound impact on one’s ability to stay grounded and manage stress.” Here’s one breathing technique Petersel suggests trying out when you’re going through a tough encounter with your manager: Breathe in for 10 seconds, hold for five at the top, and breathe out for 10 seconds. Breathing in will bring more oxygen to your brain, bringing you energy and clarity. Breathing out will release calming neurotransmitters, to help you stay grounded and calm. Find Support But at the end of the day, if you still find yourself struggling and need help managing the stress and anxiety, it may be worth visiting a therapist, suggests Petersel: Going to HR can be intimidating. There’s fear you can lose your job or it will be taken the wrong way or your boss will find out. Going to someone who’s removed from the company helps you feel safe and gives you the chance to be vulnerable without worrying about it getting back to someone- a therapist will always honor confidentiality…just having the space to be really honest and open is important. If you’re not comfortable with a therapist (or can’t afford one), you shouldn’t feel stuck. Surround yourself with a support network- whether that’s your family, friends, or even the colleagues you work with, and lean on them when you’re feeling lost, down, or upset. It’s as simple as saying, “I’m dealing with a really tough boss, and I can’t leave right now, so I’d love if you could help pick me up or listen to me vent when things get especially bad.” While it certainly may not feel like it in the moment, Petersel says, even the most challenging work environments ultimately become learning experiences. You may not be able to leave now, but by focusing on taking care of yourself, you’ll come to figure out what you don’t want in your next manager- and be able to avoid finding yourself in this kind of situation again. And no matter what you decide to do after reading this article, memorize this and repeat it to yourself when things become too much: You deserve a manager who treats you fairly.
