But unfortunately, we cant all have strokes of genius all the time- and eventually, some duds are guaranteed to make their way to the amtsstube whiteboard or Monday morning meeting.While it may seem obvious to you when a suggestion should be sent directly to the circular file, its not necessarily quite so clear to the person sharing it. But, when youre managing a project or a team, you cant always just say that. How you respond to lousy ideas can have a significant impact on peoples future performance, not to mention morale and general office harmony.Fortunately, there are a few tips Ive found useful when youre handed a disaster of an idea to avoid shattering your colleagues self esteem- and maybe even yield better ideas in the process.1. Ask For ClarificationSometimes, the best way to get an idea that just isnt workable off the tabl e is to highlight its flaws. If youre given a particularly legless proposal, ask your colleague to explain in more detail how she would address the areas where you feel the plan is lacking.Heres a fictional example (although I actually kind of love this idea) Lets say a colleague suggests that everyone in the office should be mandated to eat bacon for breakfast every day as a way of ensuring the team has enough protein and wont be hungry at 10 AM. But you know several employees that have heart conditions, not to mention some vegans, and a few individuals that dont eat pork for religious reasons. Sadly, bacon just isnt going to work.But rather than simply blurting out that her idea is ridiculous, you could ask her to provide more detail, letting her share how she would address all those in the office who have dietary restrictions.When you ask someone to think through the holes in her proposal, she may come to the realization herself that her idea might need some work, and gracefully withdraw it to do a bit more research.2. Pretend Its Your Only OptionThis is a tougher approach, but it also has the potential to transform a crummy idea into a great one Before making a judgment on an idea, try to see if you can make it work.Why? When were forced to accept a certain outcome, we naturally switch to problem-solving mode, which often leads to some pretty creative solutions. Plus, inspiration comes from all kinds of different places, so chances are, somewhere in that lousy idea, theres some nugget of a good idea just waiting to be found.Considering the idea from above, pretend that the bacon solution is your only option. How can you make bacon work? Turkey bacon? Vegan bacon? Offering a variety of other protein-packed breakfast choices for your employees?By switching gears a bit, and talking through how to make a bad idea work, you just might find that a great idea develops. And if not, your colleague will at least know you made a real attempt to collaborate and develo p her idea, rather than just shooting it down from the start.3. Put Yourself In Her ShoesOf course, there are some ideas that youll just have to veto. In this case, one of the most important reminders I give myself before handing out feedback is to consider how the other person might feel when receiving it. Try remembering how you felt when someone shot down one of your ideas- you can probably think of a few ways the bearer of bad news couldve delivered the message with a little less sting, right?Phrase your comments in a way that will take into consideration any sensitivities your colleague may have (e.g., did you reject the last four ideas shes had on this topic already?), and deliver your message with empathy.By taking into account how she might hear your feedback, your message will likely be much better received.That said, dont sugar coat it- you dont want her to feel youre giving any special treatment. My tried and true method is to start by identifying the merits of the idea f irst, then point out where it needs work, taking care to be constructive, not critical. brde but not least, always close with a positive word- you want her to keep tryingThe best way to generate great ideas is to cultivate an environment in which everyone feels like his or her ideas have a fair shake. Not every idea will be the next best thing, but follow these steps, and youll ensure your colleagues keep trying. And who knows? 11 AttacksHow News Coverage Has Changed Since the 9/11 AttacksOn Sept. 11, 2001, it didnt matter if you were anchorman Tom Brokaw of NBC News or a rookie reporter at a small town nachrichtenpaper, you were faced with a crisis you never before experienced or could have imagined. The decisions that were made in newsrooms across the country have left a lasting change in how the news media covers storiesto this day. Sensitivity in Reporting The attacks needed no hyperbole, no creative writing to make them appear worse than they already were. In the days after the attacks, David Westin, the president of ABC News, ordered that video of the jets hitting the World Trade Center in New York City bedrngnis be repeated over and over so as not to disturb viewers, especially children. That was a landmark decision, considering how many times Americans had been exposed to video of the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion and the assassination of Pres. John F. Kennedy. Before then, if you had good video, you usually exploited it. Today, news organizations are re-examining coverage of violent stories, such as mass shootings. Some are deciding that even when a video is available, it is too graphic to put on TV. Technology Highlights Personal Stories In the years since 9/11, smartphones with video recording capabilities and the ability to immediately upload footage to the internet have become ubiquitous. Cell phones can snap photos and record videos and post them online. In the rush to get the story on the air, news managers have to decide how to use this form of communication. A key question is whether to use only the images that were sent directly to the media outlet or to use whatever you can find on the Internet without regard to privacy or ownership. The same is true for posts on Twitter or Facebook, which didnt exist in 2001. A media company needs to establish a social media policy about how to use these tools. Visible Patriotism Remember the U.S. flag pins that po liticians and newscasters began wearing shortly after the attacks? At first, they were seen as a sign that America would stand strong. Before long, critics said they were being used to show political support for the policies of President Bush. Reporters with news organizations that would never take a political stance were faced with a dilemma- keeping the pins on may make it appear that the journalist was supporting a political agenda. Taking them off could look un-American. ABC was one organization with a policy that specifically stated the pins and other symbols could not be worn. The pin flap has faded, but the patriotism battle continues over a cable TV channel. Al Jazeera English (AJE) presents reports from a Middle East perspective, offering Americans a look at how people in another part of the world views us. Even ten years after 9/11, cable TV companies reportedly worried about a backlash if they offered the channel, even though AJE has won a Columbia Journalism Award. Cu ltural Differences Divide Once the nation saw the faces and read the names of the 9/11 suspects, it became easy to target people of Middle Eastern ancestry or Islamic belief as possible terrorists. News organizations chose to actively fight that stereotyping or saw an opportunity to pander to it. Fox News Channel has been accused of playing to Americans fears of Muslims. Others in media are criticized for assuming that all terrorist acts since 9/11 are committed by Muslim extremists, then acting surprised when the suspects in some violent acts, like the 2011 attack in Norway, turn out to be white and Christian. Other media outlets have taken a different approach, seeking Muslims in their own communities to interview about their faith and rituals. Coverage of a threatened Islamic Jihad is replaced with stories explaining Ramadan, a holy month. Possible New Threats Bomb threats and mysterious white powder discoveries have become a part of U.S. society since 9/11. News managers of ten struggle as they decide whether rumors of a possible violent act are newsworthy or just feed into fear. For years, a bomb threat at a neighborhood school was dismissed as the work of pranksters and ignored. bedrngnis anymore. Now they are often reported if arrests are made, even if the suspects are just mischievous teenagers. White powder will bring out the news crews to this day, even though most discoveries turn out to be harmless, like the dust found in Chicago or the instant soup uncovered in New York. Still, the coverage shows that reporters have conditioned themselves to treat every situation as serious. In the years since the attacks, journalists have a delicate balancing act. Cover every development as a breathless alert and be accused of sensationalism. Downplay threats and be blasted for putting lives in jeopardy. News managers find themselves making the same judgment calls as politicians and law enforcement experts. But all these groups now have the wisdom that comes from witnessing and surviving 9/11.

Salaried or hourly employees know all about punching the clock, filling out that time card and receiving those weekly paychecks with a stack of deductions for Uncle Sam. While traditional employee positions are certainly the most common work arrangement, there may be an alternative way to bring home the dough without all the administrative red tape up front.Freelance or independent contractor work is a typical arrangement in a variety of career paths. In writing, some trades positions and a variety of service sectors its more common than not to run across positions that throw out the traditional W2. While rules regarding what types of positions can qualify for this status vary from state to state, the distinction between employee and independent contractor when it comes to job duties a nd performance usually boils down to control and tools. Independent contractors set their own hours and terms for performing labor and will supply most if not all of the equipment needed for the position. This work freedom is appealing to many but comes with some drawbacks and certain complicating factors as well. From taxes to benefits, here we break down the pros and cons of accepting a position in which youre classified as an independent contractor.The Bad of 1099sPulling off the proverbial band-aid, first, lets titel the downsides to accepting a position as a 1099 worker or independent contractor. As an independent contractor what you make on the job is the same amount that comes home with you at the end of the day. There are no taxes withheld from your pay, which creates the appearance that youre making out ahead. If your mom ever told you there wasnt such a thing as a free lunch, she was doubly right when it comes to independent contracts and taxes. Taxes are still owed on the entire amount you earn as a 1099er, theyre simply paid at the end of the year when you file your annual taxes. In addition, employers typically have to pay a portion of ansicht items, such as social security and medicare, but as an independent contractor, youre responsible for this portion as well meaning youll end up with a higher overall taxed percentage of your take home pay.There are other downsides in addition to the double taxation whammy. Paid vacation is non-existent and employer funded medical insurance instead becomes self-funded. If theres a dispute over pay, youre on your own for following up with the client, often in terms of an escalating series of demand letters or eventually a day in court. When it comes to job stability, absent some other provision your client can terminate the contract at any time. Typical protections afforded employees regarding the valid cause for firing are completely out the window and maintaining a regular work schedule is often difficult as you are left to accommodate the needs of your individual clients.The Upside to 1099In case you think its all doom and gloom, there are plenty of upsides to being classified as an independent contractor. Fewer costs associated with utilizing 1099 work means that these workers can often command higher prices for similar skills or tasks. While you may not have set working hours, you often have greater flexibility for making your own schedule. If youre motivated and able to create your own personal structure, the freedom of working independently may be just the thing for you.There are also some tax benefits to help offset the previously mentioned downsides. Independent contracts may be able to deduct costs associated with their jobs that typical employees wouldnt be able to. This includes tools, supplies, and gas or mileage for transportation to and from the worksite. If you work from home, you may also be able to deduct a portion of your mortgage or rent as well as utilities as a home office expense. Finally, as a 1099 worker, you may have access to additional retirement account options such as SEP-IRAs which allow you to stash away more of your money for retirement, tax-free.What About EmployersIt isnt only workers that need to weigh the benefits and drawbacks of 1099 status. Employers should also be aware of how hiring an independent contractor affects their bottom line. For starters,tax withholding is non-existent simplifying paperwork and eliminating the need to pay employee taxes. In addition, if you hire an independent contractor you generally arent liable for their actions like you would be for an employee, which can be handy in the event something goes wrong over the course of the job.On the other hand, hiring someone as 1099 often means you can exercise less control over the final work product, which can be challenging if you have strict company policies youd like your group to adhere to. Firing an employee for cause is generally a pretty painless action but terminating a contract of an independent contractor early could mean a day in court to sort out whether you were justified. Flexibility on hours is also a must when working with an independent contractor.The 1099 Bottom LineWhether youre looking to hire a 1099 worker or are considering picking up independent contractor work, enter into any agreement with your eyes wide open. There are definite upsides and drawbacks and deciding on this method as a form of employment will typically come down to how flexible you are or would like to be in your profession. If you have a desire to step outside of the traditional employer/employee mold, an independent contractor arrangement may be just the solution for you.

Didn’t they like you?  When you’re unemployed and  bills need to get  paid, this  silence can feel especially excruciating.Instead of stewing  over these  doubts, you can take action. There are better uses of your time than hovering over your inbox or waiting for a call that may never come.Here’s what you need to understand about why no one is getting back to you and how you should respond.1. Managers are busyDon’t take an employer’s silence as an immediate ‘no.’ In general, it’s important to not take an employer’s  ambivalence or silence personally. While this job may be taking up all of your brain space, it’s helpful to understand that hiring is one of many jobs managers do - and it’s taking up the majority of their days.You can make the waiting period less painful by asking for a clear timeframe to hear back during the interview process. After the end of a call or an interview, be sure to ask about when you should expect to hear back. Having a firm deadline will ease your mind. If no deadline was given or if the deadline passes without a response, you’re well within your rights to send a follow-up email after a week.Remember to frame  the follow-up email as a gentle reminder, not as an accusation. Restate your enthusiasm and interest in the role, then ask politely for any updates in the process.This should all happen in four sentences or less. 40% of emails are  opened on a mobile device where only about the first seven words will be read, so have a clear subject line like, ‘Following up on X position.’2. It’s bad enough to have a roomful of people witness your blunder and something else entirely to stumble in front of 100,000!Point is, we can all b enefit from opportunities to sharpen the saw and minimize our mistakes.Often, it’s the words we perceive as being more “correct” or sophisticated that don’t really mean what we think they do. There are 20  such words that have a tendency to make even really smart people stumble.Have a look to see which of these commonly confused words throw you off.Accept vs. ExceptThese two words sound similar but have very different meanings. Accept means to receive something willingly: “His mom accepted his explanation” or “She accepted  the gift graciously.”Except signifies exclusion: “I can attend every meeting except the one next week.”To help you remember, note that both except and exclusion begin with ex.Affect vs. EffectTo make these words even more confusing than they already are, both can be used as either a noun or a verb.Let’s start with the verbs. Affect means to influence something or someone; effect  means to accomplish something. “Your job was affected by the organizational restructuring” but “These changes will be effected on Monday.”As a noun, an effect is the result of something: “The sunny weather had a huge effect  on sales.” It’s almost always the right choice because the noun affect refers to an emotional state and is rarely used outside of psychological circles: “The patient’s affect  was flat.”Lie vs. LayWe’re all pretty clear on the lie that means an untruth. It’s the other usage that trips us up. Lie also means to recline: “Why don’t you lie down and rest?” Lay requires an object: “Lay the book on the table.” Lie is something you can do by yourself, but you need an object to lay.It’s more confusing in the past tense. The past tense of lie is- you guessed it- lay: “I lay down for an hour last night.” And the past tense of lay is laid: “I laid the book on the table.”Bring vs. TakeBring and take both describe transporting something or someone from one place to another, but the correct us age depends on the speaker’s point of view. Somebody brings  something to you, but you take it to somewhere else: “Bring me the mail, then take  your shoes to your room.”Just remember, if the movement is toward you, use bring; if the movement is away from you, use take.Ironic vs. CoincidentalA lot of people get this wrong. If you break your leg the day before a ski trip, that’s not ironic- it’s coincidental (and bad luck).Ironic has several meanings, all of which include some type of reversal of what was expected. Verbal irony is when a person says one thing but clearly means another. Situational irony is when a result is the opposite of what was expected.O. Henry was a master of situational irony. In “The Gift of the Magi,” Jim sells his watch to buy combs for his wife’s hair, and she sells her hair to buy a chain for Jim’s watch. Each character sold something precious to buy a gift for the other, but those gifts were intended for what the other person sold. That is true irony.If you break your leg the day before a ski trip, that’s coincidental. If you drive up to the mountains to ski, and there was more snow back at your house, that’s ironic.Imply vs. InferTo imply means to suggest something without saying it outright. To infer means to draw a conclusion from what someone else implies. As a general rule, the speaker/writer implies, and the listener/reader infers.Nauseous vs. NauseatedNauseous has been misused so often that the incorrect usage is accepted in some circles. Still, it’s important to note the difference. Nauseous means causing nausea; nauseated means experiencing nausea.So, if your circle includes ultra-particular grammar sticklers, never say “I’m nauseous” unless you want them to be snickering behind your back.Comprise vs. ComposeThese are two of the most commonly misused words in the English language. Comprise means to include; compose means to make up.It all comes down to parts versus the whole. The researchers found that when left unattended for a project of opening a fictional theater, the German and Dutch participants shared information about the project equally with each other, but Chinese participants were more likely to be out of the loop and had their p erformance hurt as a result. The results suggest that smaller cultural differences are not as likely to hold you back, but the more differences that come into play like nationality and language differences, the more likely you are going to experience a knowledge gap.“Nationality minority status invites differences in team member interactions that result in less access to distributed information, and as a consequence lower performance, for low-status nationality minority individuals,” the researchers concluded.Information backchannels help employees know who to work for and what they should ask. As someone who lives in Los Angeles, enduring a daily commute can shave years off your life. When you read reports that  82 percent of telecommuters report lower stress levels, it really hits home.Working remotely does have huge benefits. It can improve your health, your monthly transportation bills, and your happiness at work. However, there are some drawbacks. I will, no doubt, read this article in five or ten years and say, “Caileen, you fool!” but for now- right at this moment- remote work is not the best option for me. Let me tell you why. Face-to-face interaction When my previous company went remote, I was not too happy. I had just gone through a horrifying breakup and I simply needed human interaction. It’s not that my coworkers were my best friends in the entire world, but they were people- people with whom I spoke, ate lunch next to, and communicated with on a daily basis. So, when I found out my company was  going remote, I was a little horrified. To me, face-to-face interaction is an integral part of work life. My bosses did take great care to set up weekly Google Hangouts, but was that enough? For me, not so much. While it worked for a long enough time, it soon became old. Even  as an introvert  (maybe especially so), human interaction- daily human interaction- is crucial for me. Without it, I slowly became disengaged in the work. It’s difficult to replicate the excitement, camaraderie, and the hustle when you’re in the “office” section of your studio apartment. For me, the lack of human interaction was my first suspicion that  remote work wasn’t  a good fitfor me- and I was right about that. Career development I was about a year into remote work, when I really felt like I hit a wall. I didn’t hate remote work the entire time. There were huge perks to working remotely. Since I started earlier in the morning (sans commute) I was able to get a ton of extremely focused work done before I ever would have been to work in a normal office. I even  wrote an article  about how much I loved working remotely. The biggest reason that  remote work  didn’t work for me was (and is) my desire to work in a live, moving environment. When my position and my entire company went remote, I had a cushy job title- but if I am being honest, I didn’t have the skill set I wanted to have for myself. Online learning  is amazing- you can learn entirely new skill sets through online courses, in-depth articles, and by following experts in your own field. However, there are things you will not learn from anything else other than hands-on experience. Sure, I can watch one thousand videos on how to tie my shoes on  YouTube, but I will never know how to do it unless I tie my own shoes. This is something that began to weigh heavily on me. I thought, the longer I stay here, the more opportunity I am missing out on. I wanted to be face-to-face with clients, to work through problems in real-time, and to experience day-to-day life that simply wasn’t happening in my apartment. The biggest drawback was a stalling in  my own professional development. A huge part of building your career is paying attention to the gaps in your own skill sets- and filling them in. It became increasingly apparent that, in order to truly earn a director title, I needed to be directing IRL. Personal discipline while working remotely This is a reason many people cite for not being able to work remotely. In truth, you will learn to build better personal discipline. Depending on your company’s remote policies, you may even be able to make your own hours. This allows any employee to work at her  peak productivity- during her most productive times. We aren’t all robots- as such, we are not all wired to be at our highest efficiency between the hours of 9 am and 5 pm. In this way, remote work can be excellent. You can ride your own productivity waves- whenever they arrive. If you have real doubts about building any sort of personal discipline, remote work probably isn’t for you. Sure, it’s great for activities like writing or pulling data- where you need dedicated time and limited distractions, but it can be detrimental when you are working on a project with a team- which brings me to my next point. Heads-down versus heads-together Heads-down work is crucial- in any position. For heads-down tasks, remote work is optimal. There are no distractions- nobody is coming to ask you a quick question. You can set your away message on Slack and toil away at your heads down work. Unless you are working heavily in data analytics or complicated coding projects, not all of your work is heads-down work. For work that needs to be completed by a  team working together collaboratively, remote work is not the greatest. This is what I like to call heads-together work. This is the kind of work that no FaceTime, no Hangout, and no video call can replicate. Believe me, I have tried. It may sound cheesy, but there is no way to fully replicate an in-person brainstorm meeting. For example, when we hold our editorial planning meetings here at CC, we get together in a room with colored markers and a whiteboard- and we go off. As we fill the weeks with content that excites and motivates us, the energy really builds. This heads-together work is crucial to the mission of your company. I am trying really hard not to use the word synergy here, but you get the gist, right? Heads-together work, to me, is invaluable. Traveling remotely isn’t that great “But you can travel wherever you want- and work from anywhere!” Ok, sure. The truth about traveling when you work remotely is that it’s tough. First of all, before you go anywhere, you are going to have to make sure you have reliable internet. In working remotely, you learn quickly that your local coffee shop probably doesn’t have wifi strong enough for your Google Hangouts. That coffee shop in Miami? You won’t know about those wifi issues until you’re there- literally sweating because you can’t join the marketing meeting you’re supposed to be running. The second problem with traveling remotely is other people. I love you family, friends, and loved ones- but you all made working remotely while traveling a real struggle. In my experience, those who haven’t worked remotely won’t (or can’t) take it seriously. As a result, when you’re traveling with others, they are constantly trying to pull you away from work. Okay, maybe it’s my fault- I can tend to be a people pleaser, so this was a huge point of stress for me. Traveling, especially for any type of enjoyment, is not that great when you’re working remotely. Seriously. You will likely miss out on happy hours, kiteboarding, midday pool lounges, Aperol spritzes, and countless other events. Is semi-remote the future? Here’s the part where I contradict everything I have said so far. Remote work can have  huge benefits- and I think it’s part of the future. Companies that allow a remote Friday or that are open to semi-flexible schedules are going to see huge increases in employee efficiency and satisfaction. How to Deal With an Emotionally Abusive Boss - The Muse How to Deal With an Emotionally Abusive Boss For all of our sakes, I wish emotionally abusive bosses didn’t exist. But I also know that’s a big wish, and I don’t know any genies (at the moment). I do, however, know several people who report to managers who yell constantly or make them cry. I know even more people who’ve been in that situation at previous roles. And the reasons why it took them so long to leave- or why they still haven’t left yet- are valid: They can’t afford to, they’re afraid to, they’re supporting families, they don’t know the next step they want to take. So, this article isn’t going to tell you that the best move is to just quit (that said, if there’s one piece of advice I can give it’s finding a way to get out as soon as you feasibly can). I’m writing this for the people who can’t leave right now and need help coping. And to make sure I’m giving you the best possible advice, I turned to Alyssa Petersel, LMSW, therapist, and Founder and CEO of My Wellbeing. Figure Out What Stress Management Tool Works for You “I think stress management is really important,” Petersel told me when we first sat down to discuss this topic. “Everyone has tools that work best for them, and it’s about finding something that’s cathartic. That might be exercising, or it could be watching something funny, or it could be spending time with friends and family. Moreover, seek support from others who have been in similar situations to help you feel less alone.” If you’re unsure of what might work for you, read this, this, and this. Create Physical Space Between the Two of You Petersel also suggests setting boundaries- literal, physical boundaries: “Communicate with your boss when you have to, but then give yourself that space.” This could be as simple as taking your lunch break or walking around outside the office when you have a free moment. This also goes for managing your boss’ outbursts. Says Lynn Taylor, a national workplace expert who’s quoted in a Forbes article about workplace bullies, “‘When in doubt, if you notice a warning sign, get out of the way. Just as you shouldn’t stick your face near the snout of a snarling dog, you should remove yourself from the path of a manic bully until things cool off.’” Embrace Mindfulness If you find it’s difficult to physically remove yourself from your boss, meditation- at your desk or at home- can also help you put up a safety net: “When things get overwhelming and you need a little bit of space, but don’t necessarily have the physical space or time to actually be removed from the situation, mindfulness helps you create space internally,” says Petersel. “[Y]ou can’t change your boss or fix his response to stress…If indeed your boss has tipped over the edge, no amount of perfection on your part…will help…What you can do is work on yourself,” adds author of How to Be Happy at Work: The Power of Purpose, Hope, and Friendship Annie McKee in a recent Harvard Business Review article. “Free up some time for renewal…mindfulness meditation has a profound impact on one’s ability to stay grounded and manage stress.” Here’s one breathing technique Petersel suggests trying out when you’re going through a tough encounter with your manager: Breathe in for 10 seconds, hold for five at the top, and breathe out for 10 seconds. Breathing in will bring more oxygen to your brain, bringing you energy and clarity. Breathing out will release calming neurotransmitters, to help you stay grounded and calm. Find Support But at the end of the day, if you still find yourself struggling and need help managing the stress and anxiety, it may be worth visiting a therapist, suggests Petersel: Going to HR can be intimidating. There’s fear you can lose your job or it will be taken the wrong way or your boss will find out. Going to someone who’s removed from the company helps you feel safe and gives you the chance to be vulnerable without worrying about it getting back to someone- a therapist will always honor confidentiality…just having the space to be really honest and open is important. If you’re not comfortable with a therapist (or can’t afford one), you shouldn’t feel stuck. Surround yourself with a support network- whether that’s your family, friends, or even the colleagues you work with, and lean on them when you’re feeling lost, down, or upset. It’s as simple as saying, “I’m dealing with a really tough boss, and I can’t leave right now, so I’d love if you could help pick me up or listen to me vent when things get especially bad.” While it certainly may not feel like it in the moment, Petersel says, even the most challenging work environments ultimately become learning experiences. You may not be able to leave now, but by focusing on taking care of yourself, you’ll come to figure out what you don’t want in your next manager- and be able to avoid finding yourself in this kind of situation again. And no matter what you decide to do after reading this article, memorize this and repeat it to yourself when things become too much: You deserve a manager who treats you fairly.
